Does God Speak to Kids?
by Nick Coates
As parents and ministry team members, do we sometimes forget that God speaks to the hearts of kids?
I Samuel 3:8-10 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
It took Eli a few tries, but he finally figured out that God was speaking to young Samuel! When this fact occurred to Eli, he told Samuel to listen expectantly to God’s voice. “…thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth.”
What is our first reflex when a child tells us God is speaking to them? As our church kids are growing up, I want to teach them that God is speaking to them, and that they should listen and respond to His voice!
